When VoIP was introduced, people were not worried about the security on VoIP as there were many other major concerns at that time. Users were focusing on the cost of its application in daily routine and reliability or functionality were the basic problems in the very beginning of VoIP.

Today, as VoIP has become a major part of our communication, we need to take some serious steps about Quality Assurance on VoIP. There are several benefits of VoIP that are attracting new users towards the use of this technology for their official and professional use. We have seen that new technologies like VoIP are replacing the old traditional communication method and our communication is purely based on these technologies.

Plain Old Telephone Systems were considered the most secure channels of communication a few years ago and VoIP has changes these methods too. In short, we need to welcome this new trend and the best thing is to make sure that we stay safe regarding the security of VoIP. Let’s have a look at some of the main security threats for the security on VoIP.

Service and Identity Theft

Most of the services providers are using VoIP as their main communication channel to provide their services to the customers and to communicate with the clients. The biggest security threat on VoIP is the theft of services and the client personal information. The hackers who play with this kind of hacking use the term Phreaking and it is described as the hacking where the hackers avail the services of any providers without illegally paying any penny.

The attackers can avoid paying the bills of the services or another client has to pay the bills of the stolen services. The authentication protocol of VoIP is not very strong so stealing the client’s credential is nothing big here. The client’s information and details are vulnerable to the hackers and they can use it as their first step towards the hack.

The service thief uses Eavesdropping to get access to the user’s credentials. In this scenario, any 3rd party can get access to private information and they can alter the calling plans, contact details, and the billing information. When they have access to such sensitive data, service theft is not a surprise.

This security threat on VoIP is not about stealing the services only but hackers can access the business data too. These things are even more lethal than stealing the services.

Security Steps for Services Theft

There are some steps that we can consider to minimize services and identity theft:

  • Encrypt the data
  • VoIP Protocols’’ authentication features must be implemented
  • Physical security can decrease the risk
  • Use secure and encrypted wireless networks

Vishing

You may have heard about Facebook phishing where the hackers use fake login pages to get the login credentials of the users. The same phishing technique is known as Vishing for VoIP. In this scenario, the 3rd party calls the users to get personal information like their bank account numbers and other details. The caller introduces himself as an agent from any trustworthy organization so you can trust their claims.

Some cases have been reported where people received calls from fraud agents who were representing themselves as the bank agent. Users were asked to provide critical information over the phone. Banks have warned the clients not to provide passwords and details to anyone over the phone.

Malware and Viruses

Like any other internet application out there, VoIP is also vulnerable to bugs, and viruses. The security on VoIP can be breached with the codes on voice applications. As they are more exposed to suspicious malware, the security has also become the main concern here.

Denial of Service

In DoS attacks, the VoIP networks are flooded with the suspicious traffic and then the system starts denying the access and connectivity to the services. If the internal resources are overloaded with the fake requests or the bandwidth is consumed, the Denial of Services attacks are possible.

These were some of the major security threat on VoIP and we have realized that the security on VoIP is not very promising. Countermeasures must be implemented to secure your phone networks.
